New medical research hub set to bring science to our local community
The £120 million eight-story building is now home to 400 scientists working on understanding genes, the environment, heart and metabolic diseases, and differences between sexes in diseases.
The building was officially opened by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, and it was a pleasure to chat with her, the people behind the project, and other local community leaders. Professor Wiebke Arlt, who has led the LMS since January 2023, is introducing a new research method called 'Team Science.' Unlike the usual lone scientist approach, Team Science encourages different scientists to work together, with input from the public and patients - a first for a government-funded UK institute.
But the LMS is not just about lab work. It's also about connecting with the local community by inviting residents in, participating in community events, and giving public lectures. The goal is to make science accessible and relevant to everyone. YHFF's mission is rooted in empowering young people in our borough, and the Medical Research Council’s commitment to community engagement aligns seamlessly with that ambition. Their researchers will go into communities and schools to share their science and build relationships that create impact through education and two-way communication.
I am genuinely excited to work with LMS and Imperial to inspire the next generation of scientists right here in Hammersmith and Fulham.
