International Day of Charity
At the Young Hammersmith & Fulham Foundation (YHFF), we have the privilege of working closely with voluntary organisations across our borough, all dedicated to supporting young people in their journey to thrive and reach their full potential. The contributions of these organisations are invaluable to young people but also extend beyond the immediate benefits they provide. These organisations’ efforts are essential to the development of our entire society.
YHFF’s visit to a member charity last week exemplifies the incredible work being done across the sector. We had the opportunity to visit Funpact’s 'Bridging the Gap' session, where three families explored the challenges of transitioning from Year 6 to secondary school. Funpact’s programmes offer a unique space for young people and their parents or guardians to navigate the complexities of significant life changes together, and provide guided support in a non-judgemental and safe environment.
This type of focussed and tailored support is only possible through the efforts of the third sector. Voluntary organisations play a critical role in bolstering the work of the public sector providing additional support, services, and advocacy that empower individuals and uplift communities. According to recent data the UK’s third sector contributes over £200 billion annually to the economy (UK Civil Society Almanac 2023), demonstrating not only its social impact but also its economic significance – and with over 170,000 registered charities across the country, the sector's reach and influence is undeniable.
Collaboration between the voluntary and public sector is therefore vital, and we hope to see even more of it in the future. Whilst the public sector provides essential services, voluntary organisations bring unique resources, flexibility, and community-focused approaches that enhance and extend the reach of these services. This synergy ensures that together, we can address complex social challenges more effectively.
At YHFF, we see the impact our member charities have first-hand on young people and wider society. Whether it’s providing mentoring services, delivering after-school programmes, or offering mental health support, these organisations play a critical role in ensuring that young people have the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.
This International Day of Charity, we invite you to join us in supporting the amazing work of the charities we work with. By visiting our website, you can learn more about these organisations and the incredible impact they have on young lives across our borough.
Today, we encourage you to learn about a charity unknown to you, sign up for a newsletter, or make a donation, supporting a cause that resonates with you. Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference. By supporting them, you are helping to create a society where every young person in has the opportunity to thrive.
