Goodbye YHFF - some farewell thoughts
I am writing this to say goodbye on my last day at YHFF as I will soon, with my family, head off to a very different way of life in South Africa. I have loved my work with Consortium partners and other YHFF members over the last three years. I have learnt so much about collaborative working during this time and am deeply grateful to have been able to work with such fantastic partners and colleagues. It has been a privilege
As I reflect on the last three years, I am in awe of the incredible grassroots work being done in the borough with young people, children and families. Being committed to improving children's and young people's lives is usually not a glamourous task. Yet so many of you do this work - day in, day out, week in and week out - not for financial reward, but because you care. You are the heroes of Hammersmith and Fulham. Not only those working on the frontline, but those working behind the scenes doing finances, admin, diary management and fundraising - you are all heroes!
Collaboration working is not for the feint-hearted, as those we have partnered with on Ready, Steady, CONNECT and DRIFT know! It requires flexibility, a listening posture, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to reflective practice. It is not easy work, but it is vital work.
Collaborative working is pioneering. This approach allows you to:
- Do something new, with others, that you would not be able to do in isolation
- Join with others around a shared purpose, forging strong working relationships that bring joy and fun to all involved
- Play to your individual and organisations strengths and benefit from the strengths of others in your collaboration
- Work with others to find new ways of working that really work!
As I move away from Hammersmith and Fulham, and look towards South Africa, I will continue to work in the collaboration and fundraising space as a freelance consultant. I am passionate about equipping individuals and organisations to develop new, healthy and life-giving collaborations and would love to chat more about this if you are interested. Also the team at YHFF will still be here to support you as a place-based organisation working in the borough.
Until our paths cross again, keep on keeping on. Your unique contribution is essential. You are making a real difference in the lives of young people.
